What gifts did God give you?

Have you ever taken a spiritual gifts assessment?

I have a couple of times. Though some of the secondary gifts change a bit sometimes, the top one has always been the same; I have a gift regarding missions.

What are spiritual gifts? Where do they come from? What should we do with them?

Romans 12:6-8 tells us:

We all have different gifts, each of which came because of the grace God gave us. The person who has the gift of prophecy should use that gift in agreement with the faith. Anyone who has the gift of serving should serve. Anyone who has the gift of teaching should teach. Whoever has the gift of encouraging others should encourage. Whoever has the gift of giving to others should give freely. Anyone who has the gift of being a leader should try hard when he leads. Whoever has the gift of showing mercy to others should do so with joy.

We don’t all have the same gift. We don’t all have all gifts. But God gave each of us a gift. He didn’t skip anyone. We didn’t get in the wrong line when He was handing out the gifts. He knew what gift we should have and that’s what we have. We are all important.

Many people believe that we should all serve God in the same way. Or in a few specific ways, maybe. Many believe that there are only a handful of “acceptable” ways to serve the Lord. But if that were true, why would He make us so differently? Some can serve the Lord through music; others aren’t led that way. Some serve by going around the world on missions’ trips; others have panic attacks at the mere thought of boarding an airplane.

I want you to read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. It specifically tells us that there are many ways to serve our Lord. Wouldn’t it get boring if we all had the same gift? Our gifts may differ but they all came from the same creator!

So what do we do now? If you haven’t before,  (or even if you have, but it was a while ago),  I encourage you to take a Spiritual Gift assessment. There are several to be found free online. One site I found that offers the assessments can be found by clicking here. I just found this through a random google search; feel free to use a different one.

When you get the results, pray about it! Ask God what He wants you to do. How He wants you to use your gifts. Even people who have the same gifts may be called to use them in different ways. God knows what He has in store for you. We just need to listen!

I find it exciting to think about how God can use us. He made us so differently, and He has a plan for each of us. He equipped us to be able to live out His plan for us. Yes, sometimes it’s scary. God doesn’t want us to stay in our comfort zone, though (that will be a topic for another post). He wants us to go out and do His work.

If you feel so inclined, feel free to post your assessment results as a comment! I look forward to seeing what gifts God has given you.
